How to Choose Paint Colours for Your Home (Without Regretting It)
Colour choice is the number one reason people repaint twice. A simple system — undertones, light, and test patches — saves you money and disappointment.
Look at undertones, not just colours
Every paint colour has an undertone — warm, cool, or neutral. A 'grey' that leans blue will look completely different in a warm, north-facing room than a 'grey' that leans brown. When colours clash in a room, it's almost always an undertone mismatch between the walls, the floors, and the cabinetry.
The practical rule: decide whether your room's fixed elements (flooring, benchtops, brick) are warm or cool, then stay in the same family. Hold colour chips against those fixed elements, not against each other, and the undertone differences become obvious.
Test in the actual room, on the actual light
Paint colours look different in every room because light changes them. The same tin of paint can look three different ways on four walls of one room. Sample pots are cheap insurance — paint large A3 patches on at least two walls and live with them for a couple of days before committing.
Check the patches in morning and evening light. Artificial lighting shifts colour dramatically: warm downlights push colours warmer, cool LED lights push them cooler. If you're changing light fittings soon, do that first.
Get the finish right, not just the colour
The same colour looks different in matte, low-sheen and gloss finishes. Bathrooms and kitchens need washable, moisture-resistant finishes. Hallways and high-traffic areas benefit from a tougher low-sheen. Ceilings are usually best in a flat finish that hides imperfections.
If colour decisions are doing your head in, a colour consultation costs far less than repainting a room you don't like. We can guide you through combinations that suit your home's style and light — and then paint them properly, with clean lines and full surface preparation.
